In late August 2009 Volkswagen announced that the current Transporter T5 would undergoing a facelift – a redesign to incorporate key engine changes specifically to improve CO2 emissions and fuel economy, as well as style alterations to the vehicle dashboard, front lights, bonnet, radiator grill and bumper. This new T5 was launched by VW in the UK early in February 2010 .
Key Engine Changes
The redesigned T5 features a new four-cylinder turbo diesel engine with particle filter. All models are 2.0 litre TDI and there are four brake horse power options - 84bhp, 102bhp, 140bhp and 180bhp, with the 140bhp and 180bhp having a 6 speed transmission. The 180bhp version features a two-stage charger with bi-turbocharging technology.
All engines have an improvement of 10% overall in C02 emissions and fuel consumption.
Interior equipment as standard now includes ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme), Hill Hold Control and Front Passenger Airbag with deactivation facility and new optional exterior equipment options include a choice of 16-inch, 17-inch or 18-inch alloy wheels, Side Assist Lane Change Assistant (to monitor overtaking blind spots), a Cab Comfort Pack (cab carpets, reading lights, extra storage pockets and vents and more!), colour coded bumpers and mirrors and a digital radio option with AUX in facility.
The 4Motion All Wheel Drive system and the DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox - automatic) transmission are also available on both the short and long wheel base vehicles.
