Manufactured by German company Webasto, a diesel fired hob removes all need for LPG (gas) from your campervan and increases your independence. Flush fitting to the counter top, this glass plate hob looks very similar to a mains electric version that you would find in a domestic kitchen setting. Easy to wipe clean and simple to operate it is extremely efficient on its fuel use, burning a maximum of 0.2 litres of diesel per hour.
Omitting LPG from your campervan not only frees you from the dependency on gas cylinder suppliers but also gives you more storage space in the boot area of the vehicle.
There are a couple of downsides to the diesel hob - the main unit hidden beneath the counter top is far bulkier than the normal LPG hob, giving you less cupboard storage space below - in the Tiree this does mean that a drawer above the fridge is simply not possible. The unit is also deeper than the standard LPG hob so requires a deeper counter space, this will mean a reduction in your rear seat and bed width of 10cm, to 110cm wide instead of the normal 120cm.
As with domestic mains electric hobs, the unit is less responsive than LPG and around 5 minutes is needed for the hob to heat up fully from first being switched - if you're not in a rush then that's probably not a problem!
The final point to consider is the small amount of diesel fumes that the unit emits from underneath the vehicle. Although in a wild camping setting this wouldn't be an issue, you may find that on a tight campsite it could be something that your closest neighbours notice.
