We’ll Help you Chose the Option that Best Suits You

As standard in the Tiree we fit a 33 litre Dometic fridge that can be powered by 12 volt, 240 volt or gas (known as 3 Way). It is possible to increase this to a 40 litre fridge but the larger size will start to encroach on your cupboard storage space.

3 Way fridges are known as Absorption fridges and are completely silent when operating. The other option in a campervan for a fixed fridge is a Compressor type which can only be powered by the 12 volt supply. Compressor fridges are the same size as the 3 Way Absorption fridges but they do make a humming noise whilst operating and will click on and off from time to time (just like you might hear from your kitchen fridge at home!) - you may find the noise annoying whilst trying to sleep?

There are pro’s and con’s of each design, the gas option on a 3 Way Absorption fridge will always give you the flexibility to use gas and not have to worry about running down your 12 volt supply - if you wild camp in Scotland then this is a big bonus, however, if you always plug into a 240v campsite supply, then it’s less important. Compressor fridges do draw much less 12 volt power than a 3 Way Absorption fridge, but if your using the gas option then of course the 3 Way Absorption fridge won’t take any of your 12 volt supply at all. The only possible down side to 3 Way Absorption fridges is that they need more ventilation to the outside than do Compressor fridges, meaning vents should be put into the vehicle side.
