When it comes to campervans how do the new VW Transporter T7 and the all new Ford Transit Custom really compare to the VW Transporter T6 and its T5 predecessor? What has actually changed since the first VW T5 rolled off the Volkswagen production line in 2003?

What is the difference between the T7 and the T6.1? The vast majority of differences are built around new technologies and improved driving experience. Safety has evolved massively over the past 23 years with a vast number of safety features now included as standard. However, when considering campervan conversions the new VW Transporter T7 also offers considerably more in terms of both increased interior space and wider availability of base van options – things that make life that little bit easier and much more up to date.

Living space is everything!! The new VW Transporter is actually 8cm wider and 3cm longer inside the rear of the van than the VW T6 or T5, it may not sound much, but when it comes to living in a relatively small space then every cm really does count. This extra 8cm’s has enabled us to increase the size of our storage units whilst also fitting in our LWB Cromarty campervan one of the widest beds in the market at 126cm – that’s a whopping 19cm wider than the new VW California bed which measures just 107cm wide!

EV and PHEV vehicles. As with the vast majority of industries the move away from fossil fuels as an energy source is well underway and the VW Transporter T7 and all new Ford Transit Custom have fully embraced this change. Alongside the standard diesel engine both a PHEV (Plug In Hybrid) or EV (Electric Vehicle) are also available to order.

Without the correct training and qualifications working on an EV is a dangerous exercise where typical lithium battery voltages range from 400v to 800v. Located on the vehicle underside the batteries are fully capable of providing a lethal electric shock and moving them in order to secure accessories such as rear seats or an underslung water tank is simply not an option.
