{"id":5192,"date":"2019-04-15T14:54:52","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T14:54:52","guid":{"rendered":"httpss:\/\/www.jerbacampervansredo.mtcserver.com\/?p=5192"},"modified":"2019-08-06T09:55:16","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T09:55:16","slug":"the-thorpes-road-trip-to-the-south-of-france-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/blog\/the-thorpes-road-trip-to-the-south-of-france-2\/","title":{"rendered":"The Thorpe&#8217;s Road Trip To The South of France"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\n started our trip to France with an overnight stay in Kent, to give us \nthe chance of an early ferry crossing from Dover the following morning. \nNot for the first time, we found that by September quite a few campsites\n on both sides of the Channel have closed for the season, often in \ncontradiction of the information provided on their website. We tend not \nto like the larger sites particularly, but do appreciate a clean and \nwell equipped toilet and shower block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our first aim in France was\n to visit Chartres. We intended to skirt the busy roads of Paris, and \nwere somewhat surprised to find ourselves (following our satnav towards \nan eco-campsite at Rambouillet) in a tunnel motorway (the A86) which \noffers 2m of headroom. I have the dimensions of our camper on a sticker \non the windscreen as a reminder, so I knew that we would be fine, but it\n was impossible to drive at motorway speeds without ducking as we passed\n the signs hanging from the ceiling of the tunnel. Not a very \ncomfortable thirty minutes or so. However, not for the first time we \nwere glad that we had treated ourselves to a motorway transponder which \nworks throughout France and avoids the inconvenience of paying the toll \nat the booth. Instead your bank account is debited at the end of the \nmonth, with a detailed list of all your motorway trips emailed to you \n(www.saneftolling.co.uk).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was last in Chartres about 40 years \nago, and Elizabeth had never been. Shortly after graduating, I had seen \nthe cathedral in its dark Gothic hues, the stone black from centuries of\n candle smoke. I couldn\u2019t then afford a guided tour, but this time we \nhad the delight of spending a couple of hours with Malcolm Miller, who \nhas spent a lifetime learning everything there is to know about the \ncathedral, and passing much of it on in his tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Chartres Cathedral from the cathedral close<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\n showed us round the newly cleaned, cream-coloured interior and \nexplained how to read a stained-glass window. And what glass Chartres \nhas \u2013 the largest and best collection of medieval glass anywhere in the \nworld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>One of Chartres\u2019 unforgettable rose windows<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The centre of the rose window<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heading\n south we overnighted at a pleasant municipal site in Olivet, south of \nOrleans. How well the French manage their municipal sites \u2013 attractive \npitches, good facilities and within easy walking or cycling reach of the\n town\u2019s facilities. This was our first trip with our bikes and we \nenjoyed the fact that our towbar carrier (an Atera Strada from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roofbox.co.uk\">www.roofbox.co.uk<\/a>)\n allows us to slide the bikes back (if we don\u2019t want to unload them) to \naccess the great storage space in the back of the van. As always, we \nappreciated the speed and ease of raising the Jerba roof, swizzing the \nfront seats round and pulling a beer from the fridge. For September, it \nwas quite a warm evening; we were steadily moving south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were \nnow in a part of France that we don\u2019t know at all well, enjoying our \ngentle wandering through the Massif Central and delighted to discover Le\n Puy en Velay as a base for three days. Again, a marvellous municipal \nsite managed by a delightful young couple, offering fresh baguettes and \npains au chocolat at the office each morning. Here we explored the town \nand its restaurants, the surrounding countryside with an attractive \nriverside cycle ride, and the historic Saint-Michel d\u2019Aiguilhe chapel \nwhich was built in 969 on a volcanic plug 85 metres high. The chapel is \nreached via 268 steps carved into the rock. Phew!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Saint Michel d\u2019Aiguilhe<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Le Puy from Saint Michel<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Cathedral cloister in Le Puy<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our\n next destination was Tain l\u2019Hermitage, where we camped in another \nmunicipal campsite this time spectacularly situated on the east bank of \nthe Rhone. Unlike almost all the other sites we visited, this one was \nbusy, and was turning people away from about 5pm. It was also unusual in\n providing plenty of mosquitoes which we beat off with our midgeproof \nscreens. From the Massif Central to the Rhone was a good drive with lots\n of bends: we were grateful for our reliable brakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following\n morning I had a little cycle around Tain and then we drove, via buying \nsome excellent wine at the Cave de Tain, along a very pleasant country \nroute to camping Le Voconce near Crestet, an ancient and very beautiful \nvillage. This is a simple but perfectly adequate country site with a bar\n and caf\u00e9 where we had our evening meal and a couple of beers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Crestet\u2019s streets were designed for donkeys, not cars<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The medieval village of Crestet<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Camping le Voconce<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now\n that we were in wine country we adopted a practice of buying 6 or 12 \nbottles at many of the domaines we visited, grateful for the fact that \nthe Wallas stove\/heater option we had chosen leaves us with usable \nstorage space which would otherwise be taken up with gas bottles and a \nheating unit. Take your pick!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Tain l\u2019Hermitage our route took\n us to Les Baux en Provence, where we had arranged to spend a few days \nwith friends who moved to France many years ago. However much we love \nour camper, it is very pleasant to have a luxurious shower and sleep \nagain in a soft bed. We find the camper bed fine but firm \u2013 pleasingly \nwider than those we have had in earlier VW conversions and remarkable \nfor providing in day-mode three full width fully belted seats \u2013 vital \nwhen we or our children are transporting a trio of grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When\n we said goodbye to our friends for the drive home we picked up fuel in \nSt Remy \u2013 the first refill since Orleans almost 600 miles earlier. We \nare amazed by the 150PS\/6-speed gearbox combination which gives similar \ndriving ease and economy to a Golf estate we had some years ago. We \ndrove up towards Condrieu but for most of the time were on the east bank\n of the Rhone. We camped that night near St Clair sur Rhone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For \nanother day we chose not to pay tolls in order to find a more scenic \nroute. Much lovely countryside today, including the river Aube and \nvillage of Auberive. White Charolais cattle and white free-range hens \n(thousands of them) were much in evidence. Once again our target \ncampsite (in Chaumont) had closed early and we had an interesting \ndiversion to a basic country site near Roches Bettaincourt, Camping \nl\u2019Orchidee Home. No phone signal or wifi, but probably our favourite \nsite of the whole trip. We were the only people there, so had its fields\n and lake to ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Camping l\u2019Orchidee Home seen through the side door of the campervan<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\n next day we decided to use motorways for speed and had our transponder \ndinging every couple of hours. Easier driving, just needing to keep \nawake! We had a shopping break in Chalons (sur Marne when I was last \nthere, now en Champagne) and a lunch break by the motorway. We were \naiming for the municipal campsite in Clairmarais but found a slightly \nnearer one at Arques, camping municipale Beausejour. Like a couple of \nother sites we\u2019ve seen, it offers a camping car parking area at a much \ncheaper rate without facilities.&nbsp; We chose the campsite and had very \nmodern facilities and again the opportunity to order morning bread and \npains au chocolat, this time delivered to our pitch from the local \nboulangerie. What a civilised country! We had a sunny teatime (the first\n rain since the last time we were in the north had fallen that \nafternoon).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All too soon we were on the ferry from Calais and \nnegotiating the M25 and M6 on our way home. It had been a great trip, \nand we\u2019re still drinking the wine. The campervan had distinguished \nitself in every way.
