{"id":5201,"date":"2019-04-15T15:02:47","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T15:02:47","guid":{"rendered":"httpss:\/\/www.jerbacampervansredo.mtcserver.com\/?p=5201"},"modified":"2019-08-06T09:29:37","modified_gmt":"2019-08-06T09:29:37","slug":"brambles-rookie-errors-and-top-tips-for-awning-users-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/blog\/brambles-rookie-errors-and-top-tips-for-awning-users-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Bramble&#8217;s Rookie Errors and Top Tips for Awning Users"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve\n had \u201cBrambles\u201d, our purple van, for three summers now.&nbsp; Even though we \nhave loved our travels in France in Brambles, my two favourite trips \nhave been closer to home. The first was our \u201ctea and cake tour\u201d of \nYorkshire \u2013 we stopped in lots of quaint little Yorkshire towns and \ntested out the Victoria sponge in every one!&nbsp; The second was the North \nCoast 500 \u2013 we held our breath on some of those roads, but the views \nwere just spectacular all the way. We could never have done either of \nthese trips in anything bigger than a VW van \u2013 single track roads, \nhairpin bends, tiny tea shop car parks (have you ever driven through \nRobin Hoods Bay?&nbsp; Then you will know exactly what I mean!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/North-Coast-500-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"north coast 500\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/North-Coast-500-road-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"North Coast 500 road\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As\n Brambles is our fourth VW (although our first Jerba), we thought we \nknew it all.&nbsp; Hahaha!&nbsp; She proved us wrong!! Here\u2019s an extract from my \n2016 blog:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cFirst day in France and already we have made a few rookie errors.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The\n first one happened when we put up the awning. We forgot that it only \nslides on and off the van in one direction. After putting it up, pegging\n it down, decorating it with bunting, pouring the first glass of wine to\n congratulate ourselves,&nbsp; we realised the only way to drive off is \nforward \u2026. and we had pitched on the edge of a 10ft drop! After some \ncursing and a glass or three of wine, we decided to deal with it by \u2026 \nprocrastinating. We don\u2019t actually have to drive away until tomorrow. Or\n the next day \u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The second and even stupiderer error \ncame when we tried to hook up the electrics! No adapter! Duh! Why didn\u2019t\n we think of that? Luckily, Monsieur le Camping came to our rescue. \nTomorrow\u2019s task \u2013 find an adapter for the hook up (after taking down and\n repositioning awning!).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Third and final error of the day\n came in the middle of the night, Himself decided to use the campsite \n\u201cfacilities\u201d at about 3 am. And why not? That\u2019s his prerogative.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Unfortunately the v<\/em>an <em>locked\n down while he was stumbling about in the&nbsp; dark and I was fast asleep \ninside\u2026 cue Man In Pyjamas \u201cchapping&nbsp; at the windaes and keeking through\n the locks\u201d until he managed to wake me from my slumbers. What\u2019s the \npoint of having in-van facilities? Now he knows!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/France-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"campsite in france\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Top Tips For Awning Users<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Hard-standing\n is a Good Thing, but \u2026. how do you hammer in the tent pegs? Solution: \nbuy rock pegs! They are genius!! Especially if you buy the luminous, \nglow-in-the-dark ones (never stub your toe on the pegs at night again!)<\/li><li>How\n do you hammer them in \u2013 doesn\u2019t your mallet bounce off them and give \nyou a bloody nose? Solution: ditch the mallet \u2013 use a regular hammer. \nWorks better all round.<\/li><li>How do you get the flippin\u2019 things out again? Solution:&nbsp; tent-peg remover!&nbsp; Buy 2, they break easily.<\/li><li>It\u2019s\n easy enough to drive away from your awning (so long as you don\u2019t park \nfacing off the edge of a cliff!): how do you line it up accurately to \ndrive back onto it? Solution: a) Put a sticker in the centre of your \nrear windscreen. b) Buy a collapsible festival flag pole (any tall stick\n will do, but finding one when you need it can be a problem. The flag \npole collapses down into a small size for carrying around). When you \npark, put the flag pole in line with the sticker.&nbsp; Now, when you return,\n all you have to do is line the sticker and the flagpole up and reverse \nonto your awning. Perfect tension between awning and van!&nbsp; Sorted!<\/li><li>You\n didn\u2019t put your awning up. You drive off for the day. When you get \nback, someone else is in \u201cyour\u201d spot. Solution: Buy an A-frame \n\u201creserved\u201d sign and leave it on your spot. It\u2019s windy. Won\u2019t it blow \naway? Solution:&nbsp; Take an empty 2 litre plastic bottle plus a length of \nstring with you.&nbsp; Fill the plastic bottle with water and hang the bottle\n from the centre hinge of the A-frame , an inch or so off the ground. \n(see photo)<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/A-Frame-Reserved-sign.png\" alt=\"water bottle reserved sign\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A- frame reserved sign<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What would you say to someone who\u2019s considering buying a campervan?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just\n do it \u2013 you will never regret it! Try a rental first so you know \nexactly what you want. Buy the smallest vehicle you can comfortably live\n in \u2013 it will take you to places bigger motorhomes just can\u2019t reach. You\n can always add an awning for when you need to spread out a bit. Also, \nwith a camper rather than a motorhome, you can use it as one of your \neveryday vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why did you choose Jerba Campervans?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\n shopped around quite a bit before settling on Jerba. It was important \nto us to use a Scottish company \u2013 it made it easy to visit for initial \ndiscussions, and we thought it would be useful if we ever needed any \nhelp further down the line. We were right. The next consideration was \nthe interior finish of the van. We didn\u2019t want an old-fashioned \n\u201ccaravanny\u201d feel. We wanted a high quality, modern finish. Jerba \nprovided just that. The interior design of the van we chose (Sanna) is \nvery innovative \u2013 we have not seen anything else to match it, with the \nflexibility of the single\/double bed slider. When the bed is used as a \ndouble, the extra space on either side gives the bed a much more roomy \nfeel. We also love having the convenience of a proper flushing \n\u201cconvenience\u201d on board!&nbsp; We knew as soon as we visited the workshop that\n Jerba was the company for us \u2013 the staff &nbsp;are so friendly and ready to \nrespond to individual needs. For example, I\u2019ve never been comfortable \nwith the idea of carrying a gas-tank on board \u2013 Jerba suggested a diesel\n hob, with the added bonus that it freed up some cupboard space! I \ndidn\u2019t even know such things existed! It\u2019s clear they know their \nbusiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Awning-tips.png\" alt=\"awning on Jerba campervan\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s next?! Where are you planning to go in the months and years to come?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next\n trip is the \u201cEmerald Isle Tour\u201d.&nbsp; This one will take as long as it \nneeds to \u2013 we have put a couple of months aside so we can take it at our\n leisure. After that, we have plans to do a Scandi-trip: we\u2019ve never \ndone that before because our old vans were a)unreliable b)poorly heated.\n Both of these issues have been overtaken with Brambles!
