Usually, our destination is France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/bike-campervan-1024x1024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/bike-campervan-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/road-bikes-1024x1024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/road-bikes-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Cycling in France\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\n is the spiritual home of road cycling and the physical location of the \ntoughest race on earth, the Tour de France.&nbsp; While football fans might \nyearn to merely step on the hallowed turf of their favoured team, let \nalone kick a ball, we cycling fans can play in the exact same arenas as \nour heroes, the monster road climbs of the Alps and the Pyrenees.&nbsp; We \ncan be Wiggins and Froome, Anquetil and Poulidor, Coppi and Bartali.&nbsp; We\n can ride the Port de Bales where Contador accelerated after Schleck \ndropped his chain; climb to Luz Ardiden where Armstrong fell, recovered \nand blistered his way past Ullrich; and tackles the twenty-one hairpins \nof Alpe d\u2019Huez which the charismatic Pantani flew up in thirty-seven \nminutes.&nbsp; I\u2019ve done them all with my wife, albeit a lot slower and far \nfewer drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nellie makes our cycling adventures so much easier.&nbsp; \nShe\u2019s our long wheelbase Jerba Campervan, and I\u2019m telling a few tales of\n how she has become an integral part of the various adventure sports \nthat feature in our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For an overseas journey, the long \nwheelbase is excellent for two reasons.&nbsp; Firstly, when travelling the \nbikes easily sit inside without removing any wheels.&nbsp; Although Jerba \nfitted our rear bike rack, we only use it on shorter, local drives.&nbsp; On \nthe motorway, the bikes are safer inside where they contribute less drag\n and so fuel efficiency is improved. &nbsp;Incidentally, if you do secure a \ncarbon bike to a rear rack, don\u2019t let the lock rub on the bike frame, \nbecause the vibration can wear a hole in the carbon shell \u2013 I speak from\n unfortunate experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second reason is space.&nbsp; After a day \nin the saddle, we want to stretch out, and while the extra 40cm of the \nlong wheelbase might not sound much, it makes all the difference to us.&nbsp;\n It makes the van slightly more expensive on some ferries but seems not \nto affect fuel consumption or handling.&nbsp; We feel it\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/simon-willis-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Cycling in France\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/simon-willis-cycling-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/camper-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Campervan Holiday\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lake\n Annecy is one of our favourite destinations.&nbsp; \u201cDo you have any road \ncycling maps\u201d, I enquired at the tourist office on our first visit, and \nin reply was handed an entire folder, illustrating a vast network of \ncycle paths and road routes graded for difficulty.&nbsp; We\u2019ve spent the most\n time in the Pyrenees where we dropped into a habit of spending no more \nthan two nights in any one place, campsite or Aire.&nbsp; Each day we have a \nfresh valley and climbs to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the area which has \ndrawn us back several times is Provence, specifically the mountain \ncalled Ventoux.&nbsp; It\u2019s not the hardest, highest or longest climb but it \nis probably the most iconic.&nbsp; When much of Europe is cold and damp, this\n part of Provence can be warm and balmy; the roads around the base of \nthe mountain are gorgeous and smooth; the drivers understand and respect\n cyclists because they\u2019re cyclists themselves.&nbsp; Of course, like all \ngiants, Mont Ventoux has a temper and can throw down horrendous weather \nif it\u2019s angry, and while it was sunny at the base a sportive on the \nmountain had to be cancelled due to snow, ice and fog at higher levels.&nbsp;\n It\u2019s a true mountain.&nbsp; Still, such storms never last long and there\u2019s \nalways somewhere else to ride.&nbsp; This Tour de France classic can be \nclimbed from three directions, and so far I\u2019ve only tackled two of \nthem.&nbsp;
