Because to those three obvious elements, you have \nto add T1 (T=trainsiton), the speed at which you get out of your wetsuit\n and onto your bike, plus T2, the transition from cycling to running.&nbsp; \nThe transition is frequently called \u201cthe fourth discipline\u201d.&nbsp; However, \nto these, I\u2019d add a fifth element \u2013 preparation \u2013 because the days \nleading up to the event can make or break race success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is \nwhere Nellie is my big, grey, not so secret weapon.&nbsp; She\u2019s our long \nwheelbase Jerba Campervan, and I\u2019m telling a few tales of how she has \nbecome an integral part of the various adventure sports that feature in \nour lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/triathlon-simon-willis-1024x1024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/triathlon-simon-willis-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Triathlon Running\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/campervan-sunset-1024x1024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/campervan-sunset-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset Campervan\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The\n first Ironman branded event on the UK calendar is a half-distance race \nin Staffordshire.&nbsp; Half-distance if also known as 70.3 and involves \nswimming 1.2 miles, cycling 56 miles, then running 13 miles of a \nhalf-marathon, all of which is exactly half the distance of a full \nIronman event.&nbsp; Staffordshire is not an area I know, so I travelled \nsouth in Nellie a few days early.&nbsp; Together we covered the entire bike \nroute, so I had to get a feel for which sections were fast and which \nrequired a lot of concentration, then I parked her and cycled those \ntricky sections.&nbsp; We camped in a field with basic facilities, and with \ntwo days to go, I felt I knew as much as anyone could about what lay \nahead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possibly more stressful than race day itself is the day \nbefore because that\u2019s when every piece of equipment has to be put in its\n right place.&nbsp; Get this wrong and you\u2019ll have a bad race.&nbsp; You have to \ntravel to the event centre, park, register, and collect all the \nstickers, race numbers and bags which that are the accoutrements of \ntriathlon.&nbsp; Bike kit goes in one bag, running kit in the other.&nbsp; The \nrunning kit hangs on a rack at the second transition T2 which, \nawkwardly, is not in the same place as the first transition because the \nStaffordshire bike course is not circular.&nbsp; This is what\u2019s called a \n\u201csplit transition\u201d.&nbsp; So you have to transport your bike and bike-kit bag\n to T1, some thirty miles away, where you\u2019ll be swimming first thing in \nthe morning, then go back to eat, rest and sleep.&nbsp; Does that sound \nconfusing?&nbsp; Good, because it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/simon-willis-triathlon-1024x1024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/simon-willis-triathlon.jpg\" alt=\"Triathlon Swimming\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/cycling-triathlon-1024x1024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/cycling-triathlon-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Triathlon Swimming\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/triathlon-1024x1024.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jerbacampervans.co.uk\/JerbaStaging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/triathlon-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Triathlon\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This\n is where Nellie comes into her own.&nbsp; Everything I could possibly need \nis inside.&nbsp; Track pump, puncture repair, spare wheels \u2013 in fact, a whole\n spare bike!&nbsp; While folk dash around until late in the evening of the \npre-race day, Nellie and I relax in the campsite next to the race \nvillage.&nbsp; Come early morning, when other racers were driving to the \nevent at 3:30am to catch the 4:30am shuttle-bus to the swim start, \nNellie and I were already there.&nbsp; I enjoyed a good night\u2019s sleep her \nfamiliar, comfortable bed and departed with breakfast and a hot cup of \ncoffee in hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, the detail of each triathlon is \ndifferent, but the benefits of racing from my own comfortable van, a \ntrue mobile home, cannot be over-stated.&nbsp; She has taken me around \nScotland to races on Aran, Loch Lomond and Aberfeldy, and further afield\n to Pula in Croatia and, for a full Ironman, to Maastricht in the \nNetherlands.&nbsp; Each time I\u2019ve arrived at the start line more relaxed and \nin better condition than if I\u2019d travelled in a car and stayed in a \nhotel.&nbsp;
