The Scottish Business Pledge

Jerba Campervans have recently joined the Scottish Business Pledge! There are 9 pledges that businesses within the Scottish Business Pledge must meet; Living Wage, Zero Hours Contracts, Workforce Engagement, Balanced Workforce, Invest in Youth, Innovation, Internationalisation, Community and Prompt Payment.

There are now over 420 companies that have signed up including ScotRail, Scottish Water, University of Edinburgh and Mackies. The majority of the businesses who have signed up are smaller firms, showing that it is possible to be successful in business while still remaining ethical with fair and responsible business practices. We will briefly explain a few of these pledges and how we are meeting them here at Jerba Campervans.

Jerba Campervans are a Living Wage employer, this ensures that all our workers can have a good standard of living, provide for their families and plan for the future while also increasing self-worth and confidence. This not only benefits our workers but the wider society by preventing poverty, inequality and lack of opportunity. Furthermore, this helps improve the quality of our camper vans. An independent study among Living Wage Employers found that more than 80% believed that the Living Wage has enhanced the quality of the work of their staff, while absenteeism had fallen by 25% (https://scottishbusinesspledge.scot/living-wage/#ffs-tabbed-12)

Invest in youth is another of the pledges that Jerba Campervans feel strongly about. Bringing new and fresh talent into our business brings with it new ideas, new skills and enthusiasm that keeps us competitive and creates new opportunities to further develop the business. This also helps the wider society by increasing economic growth. This can be seen with us taking on recent school leavers as young carpenters and then putting them through a four-year modern-day apprenticeship. This investment in youth can also be seen with Jerba recently taking on a marketing graduate.

Innovation is another pledge that Jerba Campervans are committed to. This helps to ensure that we remain competitive and continue to provide the highest quality campervans. Innovation increases internationalisation, and this helps to increase UK’s international competitiveness and reputation on a global platform. This conveys how innovation leads to improvement for both the business and wider society. Innovation can be seen at Jerba with our removable Ventile elevating roof canvas and this has also increased prospects of internationalisation with plans to start distributing our elevating roof in Europe.
